This session was very exciting first for me! It was my first time photographing a Bratabandha. If you’re like me, you may need a little more information about what this entails. A Bratabandha is a special Nepalese ceremony for young men between 8-12 years old. Think of it as a coming of age ceremony!

Apparently, there are many complex parts to the full Bratabandha ritual, but I was asked to capture the fun moments from the “friends and family” part of Lucas’s Bratabandha. As you’ll see in the photos, this was an absolutely beautiful gathering of friends and family. Not only was everyone dressed to the nines in stunning saris and suits, but Lucas’s parents also arranged traditional Nepalese and Indian catering, which was absolutely delicious! 

One of the great things about being a photographer is that I get to be a fly on the wall and watch everything unfold. Although I knew only a couple of people when I arrived at this event, it was great to see new and old friends mingle, family members catching up, and everyone celebrating this ancient cultural tradition together. 

My favorite part of the event was when guests took turns coming to the front of the room to perform traditional Nepalese and Indian dances or songs for everyone. The beautiful, deeply colored saris swished and flowed with the dancers. Even the tiny toddlers joined in to dance by the end, mimicking the moves of the adults. The singing ranged from traditional Nepalese ceremonial songs to silly kids’ songs from video games!

I’m really grateful that I was able to be a small part of this beautiful ceremony. I love learning about different cultures and traditions, and it was really an honor to capture these special memories for Lucas and his family.
